Sasha and Lily had a mutual desire to move away from conventional romantic tropes in R&B music videos,  still relaying the core of the song; love. Instead of featuring a traditional love interest, Sasha conceptualised the moon itself as the object of longing.

“With romance the theme of most popular songs, videos might be expected to feature boy-meets-loses-wins-girl mini-stories.” (Aufderheide, 1986). In rejecting this structure, Moonlight serves to reposition femininity from romantic dependency and the visual narrative became a more symbolic portrayal of love.
